Many of you will remember Bashir Naderi, my constituent who was threatened with deportation back to Afghanistan when he reached age 18, after being brought to the UK as an unaccompanied 10 year old child following the murder of his father by the Taliban.
In 2016, he was ordered for removal by the Home Office, and I’m pleased to say that following a long campaign and a 14,000 strong petition, the Home Office have finally granted Bash refugee status.
A massive thank you to everyone who supported Bash’s campaign, signed the petition, wrote to me and helped raise awareness.
I’ll continue fight for a change to the hostile immigration laws for unaccompanied children who flee war and other dangers. Bash’s case is not an isolated one. The Home Office have sent hundreds of unaccompanied children back to countries it deems ‘unsafe’ simply because they reach age 18. This has to end.
