Today I backed the campaign to block the removal of free TV licences for the over-75s. Once again the Tories are ripping up their manifesto promises. This time it’s their pledge to pensioners in Cardiff that they would keep free TV licences until 2022. There are over 3,610 households in Cardiff Central who are entitled to a free TV licence under this scheme, and up to 2,690 of them could lose them under possible changes. Our older people are going to pay the price.
We know there are millions of older people who struggle to get by, many of whom have a disability or live completely on their own. The NHS is clear that the over-75s are particularly likely to be socially isolated. It’s utterly callous of the Government to sit by while free TV licences, often a lifeline to the wider world, are taken away.
The Government must step in and save free TV licences for the over-75s.
