Great Western Railway have provided me with an updated on their electrification work on the mainline between Cardiff Central and London.
Next week (Monday 11 June to Thursday 14 June), evening services will be affected by electrification work with some services replaced by buses and others taking longer diversionary routes. More information is available on GWR’s dedicated web page GWR.com/electrification2018
The Severn Tunnel, and Patchway Tunnel, will be closed for electrification work through to Cardiff from Saturday 16 June to Friday 6 July. Long distance services between London Paddington and South Wales will run to an amended timetable and won’t call at Bristol Parkway. There will be a reduced service operating between London Paddington and Bristol Parkway with just one train an hour at peak times. You may need to change at Bristol Temple Meads for trains to Bristol Parkway. Coaches will replace trains between Bristol Parkway and Newport as well as between Bristol Parkway, Patchway and Severn Tunnel Junction.
You can check specific journeys for both pieces of work on GWR.com/Check
We recognise that the temporary timetables will add to journey times and we are doing all we can to get the message out about the changes. Electrification will mean we can switch our new long distance trains from diesel to electric power on these sections of the route, improving reliability and giving us the opportunity to reduce journey times in our 2019 timetables.
