Short sighted and isolationist policy of ending free movement is harming our Universities

Here in Cardiff Central we have 3 fantastic & vibrant universities – it’s such a shame to see the international standing that they’ve worked so hard to achieve being damaged by the Government’s isolationist, backward looking policy of ending freedom of movement. I regularly hear from university staff and academics concerned about the effect this reckless policy is having on …

Visiting Superbugs Pop-Up Science Event

I had a great time today visiting ‘Superbugs’, a pop-up science event in St Davids Shopping Centre run by scientists from Cardiff University. The pop-up allows visitors to enter the microbial world; discover the bacteria that live in, on, and around us; see how we treat infections that make you ill; and learn how the bacteria are fighting back against …

Solidarity with Striking University Staff

Pensions aren’t the most exciting topic of conversation, but ensuring we have financial security after retirement is becoming more and more important as we live for longer. Representing a university constituency with tens of thousands of students and university staff naturally means I have taken a very keen interest in the current pensions dispute between the University and College Union …

What Will Happen to the Welsh University Sector After Brexit?

This afternoon I spoke in a St David’s Day debate about Welsh affairs and Brexit. I used the opportunity to highlight the issues that the Welsh university sector will be facing after Britain leaves the European Union, including whether the sector will be able to attract the best minds, and if there will be a replacement for vital research funding …

Higher Education Bill Debate

As my constituency includes three universities – Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University and the University of South Wales – I am very passionate about holding the government to account and securing a good future for research and learning in higher education. This afternoon and evening Parliament debated the government’s Higher Education and Research Bill. The Bill, according to the Government, is …

Currently 850,000 people are living with dementia in the UK, including approximately 3,700 in Cardiff alone and we urgently need better ways to treat and prevent the diseases that cause it. During this visit, I witnessed projects at Cardiff …

On Friday 15th April, I was pleased to join Cardiff Students’ Union President Claire Blakeway and other students at the launch of Cardiff University Students’ Union’s new campaign to tackle lad culture on Cardiff campuses. The NUS defines lad culture as “a group or ‘pack’ mentality residing in activities such as sport and heavy alcohol consumption, and ‘banter’ which is …

Congratulations to Cardiff University Winning Living Wage 2015 Award for Wales

As a long time Living Wage campaigner I was proud to congratulate Cardiff University in Parliament today on their Living Wage Champion Award, the only university in the UK to receive this recognition. I also took the opportunity to ask Chris Grayling, Leader of the House, to advise the Chancellor that the Tories’ so called national living wage is nothing …
