The Homeless World Cup is coming to Cardiff Central!
As a massive footy fan myself, I’m so proud that our city is hosting the 2019 Homeless World Cup, with over 500 players from 64 teams over 50 countries all coming together to use football to inspire homeless people to change their lives.
The 17th edition of the tournament will take place at Bute Park with 48 men’s/mixed teams and 16 women’s teams. Not only will there be the football tournament, but there will also be some great music acts and spoken word events aiming to disrupt the discourse around homelessness.
Homelessness is a growing problem in the UK and all over the world and the Homeless World Cup Foundation are on a mission to use football to inspire homeless people to change their lives and to change attitudes and perceptions to homelessness.
The sense of empowerment that comes from participating in football helps people who are homeless see that they can change their lives. When a person who is homeless gets involved in football, they build relationships; they become teammates who learn to trust and share. The work that the Homeless World Cup Foundation do to get homeless people involved in football and subsequently change their lives is incredible, and we are honoured to host this tournament in our city.
So if you can, get down to Bute Park this weekend, enjoy the wonderful tournament and get behind your team!
There is a huge programme of events – not only football but music and talks from the likes of James Dean Bradfield of the Manic Street Preachers, Michael Sheen and Gwenno!
