July 4th is the culmination of a year round campaign supporting Independent Retail Businesses Across the UK.

Here in Cardiff Central we are lucky to have such a wide range of independent retail businesses. Whether you’re at the Maelfa in Llanedeyrn, Albany Road, Clifton Street or our vibrant City Centre you’re never far from a thriving, independent retail business in Cardiff Central.

Independent retailers offer choice, diversity of product and service, tradition as well as innovation, and a more personal service to customers. They are also job creators and contributors to local and national economies.

And with retail spending under pressure, never have they needed our support more.

Visiting zero-waste shop Ripple on Albany Road recently – the shop, which was the brainchild of Sophie Rae, was crowdfunded by the local community and sells a range of clothes, homewares, food and supplies all without plastic packaging.

Why are local independent businesses so important?

• Independents account for something in the order of 65% of the approximately 290,000 retail outlets in the UK

• Research has shown that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business, 63p is re-spent in the local area compared to 40p in every £1 spent with a larger business. (Source: FSB)

• Supporting independent local businesses helps job creation and job retention and retains diversity, choice and character in local communities.

This year, the campaign is asking anyone who can afford to to spend £5 in a local independent shop today. If we were all to do this, independent retailers would benefit to the tune of around £260 million.
