  1. Gareth Davies says:

Hi Jo, I’m nominating The Discovery not for its wonderful range of Resl Ales many of which are local, or its incredible range of food which is always superb (they use local produce such as Wild Garlic from the Wild Gardens in Roath Park for example!)
I’m nominating it for the spirit of the place, the staff and the locals. The ‘Disc’ Represents what I believe to be ‘community’ (something we dearly need to hold on to in these times!) pensioners mix with young people and talk, yes talk learning from each other, all cultures are welcomed (even Swansea City fans!) treated as equals, students from Cardiff Met, millionaires from Cyncoed socialise, prisioners are rehabilitated by working there via a partnership with the Clink and residents from the supported housing flats opposite all mingle together as equals which as we know often isn’t the case in other settings. It doesn’t look much from outside but on the inside it’s a warm, happy and fun place which is what a local pub should be and importantly for me it’s not a big ‘chain’ pub but one of five owned by the same groups of people who are from Cardiff. Since loosing my eyesight and struggling to come to terms with plus other difficult hurdles I’ve had to overcome the people in the Disc, staff, locals alike have been there for me, helping me, supporting me and importantly treating me as me not the blind bloke, often with a good degree of shall we say humour! (My Guide Dog Perry also gets to socialise with his mates as dogs are welcomed) without getting into politics, we are living in times where society is becoming increasingly divisive between the haves and have nots but the Disc to me represents you former colleague Jo Cox powerful words “we have more in common than divides us”. Anyway, it would be nice to see you and your team in there for a drink sometime soon…and bring your dogs!!

  2. Hi Jo, My name is Perry and I’m a Guide Dog and I would like to vote for the Discovery Pub. I take my owner there quite a lot! He likes it as all his friends go there who have helped him deal with loosing his eyesight, as in all good local pubs the people rallied around him to keep him smiling during the tough times, they even helped him and me find a new home and helped us move in. I’m not the only dog that goes to the Disc lots of us go there, we like to socialise as well and it stops our owners of all ages from becoming sad and lonely which is a big problem these day! It doesn’t matter what sort of dog you are we are all welcome (so long as we behave!!) just like the humans who go there, no one is judged, and everyone is kind to each other. Just like the humans all of us dogs give each other support when life is tough and if it wasn’t for the pub we wouldn’t see each other. So from all of the dogs locals who drink water and have treats in the Discovery we think it should win your competition as a pub isn’t just about humans you know! All the best Perry (aka Pezza the Guide Dog)
