Not being able to afford to buy sanitary products is embarrassing and demeaning. Period poverty is a big issue across the country. Eight years of austerity policy from the coalition and subsequent Tory Governments has directly contributed to this shameful state of affairs.
That’s why I met with women trade unionists from my union, GMB, in parliament to help them promote their campaign to tackle period poverty. GMB are asking the UK Government to provide more funding for schools to provide free sanitary products for pupils who need them. Our Welsh Labour Government has already announced a £1 million fund for sanitary products in schools and the community to address the issue. I want girls and women in England to have the same provision.
No girls or women should miss out on school, job opportunities or life because they can’t afford sanitary products. This has to stop.
