Keir Starmer, speaking on the steps of Downing Street promised a Government of Service. With a clear mandate, Labour is getting on with the job of delivering the change this country so desperately needs.

The King’s Speech shows that Labour has a clear plan to govern, offering serious solutions to the problems we face. The Tories put the national interest to one side and let our country’s problems fester whilst they focussed on saving their own skins. We will make the difficult decisions needed to fix the fundamentals and deliver our six first steps for change.

Every day we are discovering more of the mess the last government has left for us to clear up. Our prisons are in crisis, sewage has flooded our rivers and seas and the Chancellor has warned our public finances are in their worst state since the second world war. So, the change we need will not happen overnight. But that work has now begun.

This UK Labour Government will do the long, hard, patient work of serious governing to get this country back on track – that’s what this King’s Speech is about. We have set out a clear destination for this country, and we will work every day to get there.
